Dragoneers With Miss Connie During Spring Break

If you have been wondering what Dragoneers is all about, here's your chance:  they will be meeting during Spring  Break, Thursday, March 14, at 4 pm in the Children's Activity Room. The Dragoneers meet, then march around the Children's Area, discuss which book they have been reading, hear a story read by Miss Connie, make a craft, and have a snack.

A Heap o' Holiday Cheer: Programs for All Ages @ Your Library

Original illustrations from Dicken's A Christmas CarolChances are good that at some point between now and the ceremonial breaking of the first New Year's resolution, each and every one of us will temporarily give in to the bah-humbuggery that is as much a part of the season as the mistletoe, the eggnog and the annual Black Friday Feast of Immaculate Consumption. It’s natural and nothing to be ashamed of. A Christmas Carol remains so popular not because we are a nation of Tiny Tims, but because we all have at least a little Scrooge in us and we want to be reminded of the fact before the ghosts start waking us up at all hours to go flitting around the space-time continuum.

Luckily for all of us, Harris County Public Library offers a little oasis—actually twenty-seven little oases—from the hurly-burly that is the holidays, a place where you can find a nice quiet corner and comfortable chair in which to unwind and let some of the frenetic festivities go on without you, a place where you can browse the aisles and not hear the exOriginal illustration from Dickens' A Christmas Carolhausted whimpering of your credits cards in your wallet, a place to reconnect with the handmade spirit of the holidays, a place to join with others in song, and a place to sit with your child or grandchild in your lap and be dazzled again by a tale of the season.

Remember, all branches will be closed Saturday, December 22 – Tuesday, December 25 in observance of the holidays, so don’t forget to stock up on books, DVDs and music for those cozy evenings.

Below are some of the holiday programs still in store at HCPL.

Holiday Party Time!

Happy Holidays everyone!  At the library, we've always celebrated this time of year in style with our annual Santa's Ranch.  Come out this Saturday 1-4 PM for food, crafts, music, facepainting, and of course a visit with the big guy himself.

At 1 PM join us as the Living Bells Handbell Choir plays holiday favorites such as "Home for the Holidays" and "Here Comes Santa Claus".  Then at 2 and 3 PM, listen to Christmas jazz played first on a trumpet then a saxaphone.

While you are here, don't forget to visit Santa's Gift Shop to pick up that last minute Christmas present!

Baldwin Boettcher Story Time Information

Story time

If you haven't stopped by our story time recently, make sure that you  do!  Last week for our craft we made our own stories.  We used foam  stickers, and the children came up with some pretty complex stories.

Summer Reading is Crafty Fun

cy clipboard craftkw figurineSummer Reading fun brings all sorts of creative craft opportunities to your local branch.  As you see here, Crosby teens are creating custom clipboards with help from Harris County Precinct 2, young Freeman customers are creating art from cardboard boxes, Kingwood teens are learning to paint figurines with help from Texas Battle Bunker, and Katy teens made self portraits in cupcake form.  Check out the events calendar to see what crafty fun is happening at your branch!

Creative DIY Bookshelves

ladder bookshelvesTake a look at 25 creative and fun bookshelves you can make at home.  I love #3 (pictured right) and #4, the ladder bookcases. I'm thinking you could probably spray paint the ladders to have them blend in with the color scheme of your home or you could try to find ladders that would coordinate with a specific design theme. Maybe old wooden ladders for a western/country feel or shiny, silver aluminum ladders for a more industrial design. I also love #24, the stacked benches. Genius! And don't even get me started on #23, spice racks attached to the side of a dresser. Love it!

First Week of Spring Children's Activities
