We Need Even More ESL Tutors

Ten weeks ago I wrote that our English as a Second Language programs are burgeoning and that we need tutors. A number of people have signed up and we’re so grateful. But now we need even more tutors because even more people are asking to learn English.

In case you’re not aware of our programs, every week at the library we hold discussion groups that provide forums for practicing speaking English, and we also offer individual tutoring sessions--also at the library--at times convenient to the tutor and the student. We're looking for more volunteers to tutor people who want to learn to speak, read, and write English. We provide training and support and no, you do not need to know a second language to teach people English. Are you interested? If you'd like to vol...

Calling for English as a Second Language Tutors

Have you ever thought of helping someone learn to speak English?
Among the various English as a Second Language (ESL) programs here at the library is a tutoring program that partners language learners with volunteer tutors. At the end of September we’ll be training a new group of volunteers in the basics of being a tutor so we’re putting out an appeal for interested people.
To be a tutor here you do not have to have language skills in another language. All the tutoring happens at the library; the sessions are scheduled at the convenience of the tutor and the student; and tutors are given a variety of tools and supports to help with the process.  If that awakens your curiosity, then please consider taking the training day and see if this is for you.

Calling All ESL Tutors! / ¡Llamando a todos los tutores de ESL!

Do you know someone interested in learning or improving his or her English? Are you interested in being an ESL tutor? We're working on starting an English as a Second Language program here at the library, so let us know as soon as you're able if you would like to be part!

Giving Back

Are you looking for a way to give back to your community?  Consider becoming a English as a Second Language tutor.  Harris County Public Library offers an English as a Second Language program for adults in the Katy community and we are looking for tutors.  Tutor just one student or teach an entire class.  Don't worry if you don't speak a foreign language, we want your students to be speaking English anyway!  If you are interested in this valuable volunteer experience, we encourage you to join us for a tutor training session next Saturday, March 6 from 9 AM to 3 PM.  We will provide for you all training materials and a free lunch.  All we ask in return is that you actively support the ESL program here at Maud Marks for at least 9 months.  Please click here to register for this volunteer opportunity.
