ESL Tutors Needed

In the Katy area there is a great need for English as a Second Language instruction for adults. Although the Maud Marks Library offers many free ESL classes we are unable to keep up with the demand.  If you would like to help someone learn to speak English please consider taking our ESL tutor training workshop on Saturday, October 4, from 9 AM to 2 PM.  There is no charge for training attendance or materials.

Thank You LSC Tomball Community Library ESL Tutors

Lone Star College Tomball Community Library would like to thank the ESL tutors who attended the ESL In-service about Teaching Reading and Using News For You.

The workshop covered a variety of Reading techniques, activities and strategies. The tutors were told about the free language software, Rosetta Stone and how it could benefit the students who cannot attend face-to-face classes this summer. The tutors were also shown how to use the library language database, Mango Languages.

We want to make sure that the community is aware of all the HCPL opportunities to learn English during the 2014 summer vacation season.

If you would like more information, call the library at 832-559-4200.

Help someone open a door to any number of new opportunities by volunteering as an English as a second language tutor.

These opportunities are as limitless as the variety of ways in which people read, write and speak every day.  Common goals are learning English to help children in school or interact with school staff, get a better job, or to become a citizen.

We Need Even More ESL Tutors

Ten weeks ago I wrote that our English as a Second Language programs are burgeoning and that we need tutors. A number of people have signed up and we’re so grateful. But now we need even more tutors because even more people are asking to learn English.

In case you’re not aware of our programs, every week at the library we hold discussion groups that provide forums for practicing speaking English, and we also offer individual tutoring sessions--also at the library--at times convenient to the tutor and the student. We're looking for more volunteers to tutor people who want to learn to speak, read, and write English. We provide training and support and no, you do not need to know a second language to teach people English. Are you interested? If you'd like to volunteer, please give Charity Martin a call at 832-559-4200.
