An HCPL ESL Student Tells About Her Experience Learning English

Lives are changed in small and large ways every day at Harris County Public Library and libraries all over the world, Most of the time even we who work there don't see it. A student aces a chemistry test because she found a quiet place to study, a reluctant reader stumbles upon that book that fits like a second skin and begins a lifetime love of reading. A recently laid off oil worker brushes up on interview skills at a Workforce Solution program at his local branch and lands the job that turns into a career. So we were delighted recently when a student in one of HCPL's free ESL classes, Leonor Paez, wrote a lovely testimonial about her experience learning English and the many ways her volunteer tutor, Ann Sullivan, has helped her. Leonor has graciously allowed us to share her letter with you.

To learn more about HCPL's ESL and Adult Basic Education programs including how you can become a volunteer tutor, visit our Literacy & ELA page or call 713-274-6600.

Tutors Needed! A Little of Your Time Can Make a Huge Difference

The demand for Literacy and English as a Second Language instruction in Harris County is great, and we are trying to do our part to help meet that demand, but we can't do it without your help. Harris County Public Library is looking for people willing to share a little of their time to make a big difference in a neighbor's life. All we ask is that you attend one training session, and set aside 1 1/2 to 2 hours a week. We will supply all the materials you will need and a space at the library to meet with your student. No teaching experience is necessary. Please register for one of our upcoming tutor training sessions:

Do you want to do the kind of volunteer work that will let you see with your own two eyes the impact you’re having? If so, Harris County Public Library has a volunteer opportunity for you: become an English-as-a-Second-Language tutor! No teaching experience is necessary. We provide the materials and space at the library to meet with students. All you need is a desire to help your neighbors and 1½ to 2 hours per week of your own choosing.

We Need Even More ESL Tutors

Ten weeks ago we wrote that our English as a Second Language programs were burgeoning and that we needed tutors. A number of people signed up and we’re so grateful. And now we need even more tutors because even more people are asking to learn English.

HCPL and Houston Center for Literacy

ESL Class at Maud Marks Branch LibraryHow many words have you read today? Just think of them all: the emails, street signs, restaurant menus, websites, product labels, grocery lists, text messages, billboards, fortune cookies, instruction manuals, advertising circulars, and bills, to say nothing of the chapter of the latest Stephen King or the handful of Shakespeare’s sonnets you will read before turning out the light tonight. Chances are, if you thought about it, you would consider each and every one of those words vital to the way you want to live your life. Your ability to read not only allows you to move safely and efficiently through the world, it also enriches your inner life immeasurably.
