Fire Safety on Wednesday

This week on Wednesday, July 24th at 10:30 am we will have Fire Safety with Tom Petty and his trick performing wonder dog, Cinder.  This event will take place under the Tree House of Mercer Botanic Gardens and is for all ages.  We hope you all will join us for the wonderful and educational program.  To see what programs we have coming up, please check our events calendar at hcpl.net, or just come by and see us at the Little Blue Library inside Mercer Botanic Gardens.  We would love to see you there!

Paint by Number Was a Big Hit


Today at the Little Blue Library inside Mercer Botanic Gardens we had our Paint by Number craft for all ages under the Tree house at 1:30 pm.  It was relaxing and everyone had a great time.  To see what programs we have coming up, please check our events calendar at hcpl.net, or just come by and see us at the Little Blue Library.  We would love to see you there.

Geocaching on Friday

Come to Mercer Botanic Gardens where the Little Blue Library is having Geocaching every Friday from 9 am to noon.  No registration is necessary. Information and coordinates will be available under the Tree House each Friday. To find out more about this activity, please call Victoria at 832-927-5480.  This program is for all ages, so we hope you will come join the fun!

Filipino Food Program at Baldwin Boettcher Library

We are happy to announce that The Baldwin Boettcher Library had a Filipino food tasting program in honor of Asia Pacific Heritage Month Saturday, May 11 from 1 to 3 pm and it was a wonderful success.   It was hosted, cooked and served by our beloved Cindy Groover with some help from Kevin Groover.   The food was delicious, and we had a turn out of 25 people.  Our next food program will be for Hispanic Heritage Month in September.  So, keep a look out on our website and calendar at hcpl.net.  You can always come by and see us at the Little Blue Library in Mercer Botanic Gardens and get a calendar to take home with you.  We always love seeing you there! 

Celebrate African American Culture

School gets out early on Friday, February 15 and we have a treat for you!  Between 2-4 PM, we will be celebrating the contributions of African Americans to our wonderfully diverse culture.  We start at 2 PM with a storytime for the whole family.  Then at 3 PM, a presentation by Main Street Theater, "Speak of Me as I Am".  We'll experience the great African American Shakespearean actors of yesteryear.  This is an interactive family friendly preformance proving that Shakespear is indeed for ALL!
We will also have crafts, food, and quizzes as we learn more about Africa and the culture those early slaves brought with them.

Movie Mania: The House with a Clock in Its Walls

Join us next Monday, January 14 at 4:30 pm for Movie Mania and enjoy watching the fun fantasy film "The House with a Clock in Its Walls." In this movie based on the book by John Bellairs, a young orphan is initiated into a world of magic and mayhem by his eccentric warlock uncle and a matronly neighbor who happens to be an altruistic witch. He uses his newfound magical abilities to help them defeat the forces of evil that threaten to destroy his new home. All ages are welcome.

Reading= Hope X Change

It's Black History Month and the Maud Marks Library always likes to celebrate with style!  Join us this Saturday beginning at 1 PM as we discover why Reading= Hope X Change.  We will start the day off with readings, background music, traditional African American foods, and crafts.  Crafts include African masks, Black Panther masks, Wrinkle in Time Clocks, African American Bingo, Brain Teasers, and more!  Then, at 3 PM, join us as trombonist Kendall Moore and his jazz quartet invoke the Harlem Renaissance and the jazz craze that swept the world.

NASA Day @ My Library

 Do you have an astronomer in the family?  Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut and actually spend time in space?  At the Maud Marks Library, we have TWO space related programs coming up over the next week to feed your inner scientist!

First up, on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:30 PM, astronomers of all ages are invited to come See the Stars!  The Astronomy Society at hthe University of Houston will be here to teach us all about stars and other things you might see in our local sky.  They will even be bringing telecopes with them so you can seee for yourself what the stars and planets look like.

Citizenship Month Family Program With “Faithful Paws”

Dogs, cats, and rabbits are beautiful and incredible animals, but did you know that they can work as therapy pets? Have you ever wondered what therapy pets do, or how a dog, cat, or rabbit can become a therapy pet? Faithful Paws Pet Therapy is an amazing organization specialized in training animals specifically designed to administer unconditional love and therapy to adults and children in nursing homes or hospitals. We invite families and people of all ages to visit us on Tuesday, November 21 @ 2:00pm to learn more about pet therapy from Faithful Paws. 

Celebrate Local Artists With Family Art

During the month of April, the Maud Marks Library is celebrating local artists!  Throughout the month, some of those artists will be stopping by to do art talks and workshops.  First up, this Saturday, April 8 at 3 PM, Meghna Patil will be here to show elementary school aged children the fine art of painting.  Children and their parents are invited to come and create their own masterpieces as we learn more about Ms. Patil's art and her painting process.  This is a ticketed event.  Please show up at 2:30 for tickets.  Afterwards, be sure to check out the many paintings and sculptures throughout the library.  The Maud Marks Library would like to thank the Friends of the Maud Marks Library for sponsoring this month long event as we Celebrate Local Artists!
