The Library’s Children’s Services Department has a new center with learning activities for young children. The Early Literacy Depot is a place where parents can work with and play together with their children using manipulatives such as alphabet puzzles, magnetic letters and wooden pattern rods. These activities help children use skills contributing to their early literacy. Research shows there are six skills which help children prepare for school and learn to read. They include vocabulary, print motivation, print awareness, narrative skills, letter knowledge and phonological awareness.
