Gulf Coast Reads: Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke

What do you get when you take forty plus libraries across nine counties in Southeast Texas, add one ripping good mystery novel by an award-winning author who also happens to be native Houstonian, and toss in oodles of related events and programs ranging from book discussions to cooking classes, from genealogy workshops to Delta blues storytelling and beyond? You get Gulf Coast Reads on the Same Page.

Now in its eighth year, Gulf Coast Reads is a regional reading initiative spearheaded by area libraries that each October encourages all Southeast Texans to read and discuss a selected book and to attend a wide variety of related events at local libraries. Its goal is to raise awareness of libraries and the services they provide, as well as illustrate the ways that reading can be a way to build engagement with the community and the world at large.

This year's Gulf Coast Reads selection is the Edgar Award Winner for Best Novel Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke. The book is "a 'heartbreakingly resonant' thriller about the explosive intersection of love, race, and justice" and "a rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas."

We are delighted to say that Attica Locke will be visiting two Harris County Library locations this Saturday, October 6. Clear Lake City - County Freeman Branch Library 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM and Barbara Bush Branch Library 3:00 - 5:00 PM. Each visit will include a presentation by the author followed a Q & A session and book signing. Admission is free. Copies of Bluebird, Bluebird will be available for purchase from the branches' Friends.
