This week we are going to concentrate on Science Fiction.  Science Fiction is speculative fiction and raises controversial questions in worlds based on plausible scientific theories. Traditionally it posits future worlds and technologies, but settings in the past, rich in future technologies, have grown in popularity. No matter the time and setting, science supported by known scientific principles drive the stories.

Horror Rocks!

Have you participated in our summer reading genre challenge yet?  This week we are focusing on Horror.

Why read horror? These tales feature nightmares come to life, complete with the monsters -- human, inhuman, and psychological -- that inhabit readers' worst fears. As in nightmares, surprise is a key element. Some horror tales begin in a fairly normal world, suddenly and disastrously invaded by monsters, and lead to a horrific climax The key to horror is that although the evil may be beaten down, it is never destroyed completely.  It lurks just beneath the surface, waiting to emerge again.

Fantasy Rocks!

Have you participated in our summer reading genre challenge yet?  This week we are focusing on Fantasy.

Why read fantasy?  Story lines feature good versus evil, and protagonists battle and ultimately conquer the dark forces. The characters often attain special magical gifts, and the story lines explore ways to discover one's own potential. Characters may include mythical creatures --dragons, unicorns, elves, wizards -- as well as animals that are more may also find a home in Fantasy. Quests commonly drive the plot, and adventure elements play an important role. Elaborately detailed settings describe another world, often Earth, which does not follow earth's time line. Thus the setting may be a pseudo-Medieval world with knights and dragons or a fictional future world with elves on motorcycles. Gritty urban settings are almost as popular as more traditional historical ones.

Thrillers & Suspense Rocks!

Have you participated in our summer reading genre challenge yet?  This week we are focusing on Thrillers & Suspense novels.

Why read a thriller or suspense story? Thrillers are page-turning, heart-pounding stories we read because they are very much about life as we currently know it.  We read them for the satisfying moment when our hero triumphs over the bad guys.  Regardless of the setting, fathomless levels of secrecy and duplicity lead to moles,  double agents, and opportunities to inflict betrayal.  Current events, politics,  contemporary values, and state-of-the-art technology form the backdrop of the story.

Mysteries Rock!

What are  YOU reading this summer?  How about joining our Adult Genre Challenge at the Maud Marks Library?  This week we are reading MYSTERIES!  Why read a mystery?  Mysteries examine human nature, probing the why, the who and how. Justice is at the heart of the solution in a mystery. When "legal justice" is not an option, investigators take the law into their own hands. Readers expect the good guys to win and the bad guys to be punished.  Detectives run the gamut from amateur detectives and snoops to seasoned police detectives and hard-boiled private investigators.

Historical Fiction Rocks!
