Kingwood Branch Library Update

Kingwood Garden Club StatueThe Kingwood Branch Library lost this bout against nature.  While we survived Hurricane Ike and were open to the public providing computer access, air conditioning, electrical outlets to recharge phones and other devices Harvey stayed far too long.  As a result the library was flooded with 3 ½ feet of water.  We suffered the loss of the entire first floor, including the FOLK Norris Pelham Used Book Store.  This book store is operated by the Friends of the Library-Kingwood (FOLK) and is our primary supporter for programs, craft supplies, and other incidentals to supplement the services Harris County Public Library provides.  Books, furniture, technology, craft supplies are all gone.

Since we are now in a two story building, the rest of the collection (approximately 60,000 volumes) was left high and dry.  We were able to get in soon after and rescue that collection; it is being held offsite until we can rebuild and again operate as the great library you have come to expect, know and love.

Demo of the first floor should be done by the end of the week with construction set to begin soon after.  While there is no ETA for completion at this time, the county is operating with the goal of rebuilding as fast as possible while producing a finished product that will provide excellent service for the community.

We are looking into the possibility of bringing the library back into Kingwood in some form while we prepare for the branch to reopen. What that will be exactly is still being assessed. Until then, library staff is working on recovery efforts for the library system and the communities it serves.

Meanwhile, Kingwood residents love their library and we are fortunate that we have two libraries relatively close to us – the Atascocita Library and the Octavia Fields Library.  To answer your many questions about returning items, holds and whatnot, please follow this link for answers:

We have been contacted by many generous people who are offering book donations. At this time we cannot accept book donations.  In addition to other reasons, climate-controlled storage is a major issue, we just don’t have a place that is staffed.  Monetary donations can be accepted and will be much appreciated. Please donate through FOLK. All donations will go towards those items the community had access to prior to the storm - extra books, craft and programming supplies, furniture, and equipment - giving all of us back our great library. We will keep you up to date through the library’s web site and social media. Kingwood Branch Library – Facebook, Kingwood Library – Twitter
