The corn tortilla, with many variants, has been a staple food in North American and Mesoamerican cultures since Pre-Columbian times.  Come celebrate Hispanic Heritage month on Monday, October 12 ,2015 @ 1: 30 pm and learn how to make yellow corn tortillas using Instant yellow corn masa flour.  You will get to use a tortilla press and then cook them on a electric skillet or traditional comal. Once cooked, you can make 2 quesadillas!  We will also have an authentic molcajete, tortilla press and typical food items such as jalapeños, serrano peppers, cilantro, tomatillos and blue corn tortilla chips with salsa on display.  All ingredients will be provided by the Friends of the South Houston Library.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2015 @ HCPL

In any direction you wander on the cultural landscape of this country, you won't go very far before you see the ways--large and small--that people of Hispanic descent have transformed it. This week Book Hunters in Brief offers some reading recommendations written by Hispanic authors. Some are old favorites; others are new voices, still others are ones you might have missed.

September brings a new school year and lots of fun programs for children from infants through 12 years old.  First, this month is Library Card Sign-Up Month.  Children attending our regular storytimes can show us their library card and then put their name on a bee to place on the "beehive" on the Children's Activity Space bulletin board.

Our weekly Maker Monday programs return on Monday, September 14.  These afterschool programs are for children 5-12 years old.   They feature an activity or craft each week.  Ticket are required.  They are free and available starting 30 minutes before the program.
