Money Talks, But Do You Know What It's Saying? Financial Literacy @ HCPL for Houston Money Week

There are a lot of parents who dread having The Talk with their kids a lot less than they do talking to them about money. Why is that? Maybe it's because so many of us feel insecure about our own financial literacy. Harris County Public Library and the organizers of Houston Money Week (HMW) are here to say that there is no shame in admitting you don’t know everything, only in stumbling along pretending that you do.

Houston Money Week (HMW) is a community-wide financial education initiative that empowers families and individuals to be successful in making financial choices. HMW serves individuals, families, veterans and small business owners across the greater Houston area, offering free financial education events and raising awareness of community resources.

When most people think of literacy, they think of the ability to read and write, but there are many kinds of literacy (digital, information, wellness, to name a few) and all of them are crucial to success in life. One of the most important, and most neglected, is financial literacy. We're not just talking about the ability to make change and write a check. We're talking about avoiding the countless pitfalls and meeting the many challenges that stand between you and financial well-being. Houston Money Week is an annual financial education initiative that aims to help people of all ages to do just that.

You Work Hard for It. Learn How To Make It Work For You: Houston Money Week @ HCPL

When someone says “money is power,” people tend to think of the kind of power only the very wealthy can wield, but that old saw applies to people like you and me just as well. No matter how little we have, the better we handle our finances the greater our ability to do the things we want and need to do—whether that is putting a little aside much deserved vacation or putting our kids through college.

During the week of April 11 – 18, Harris County Public Library along with organizations across the area will participate in Houston Money Week, a financial education initiative sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas Houston Branch.
