Library of Congress

214th Anniversary of the Library of Congress

Today is the 214th anniversary of the Library of Congress.  An act that was approved by Congress to purchase books that would be used by Congress.  It was also for the filling up of an apartment for containing the books.  This is how our Library of Congress began and is one of the world's greatest libraries.

What I Did On My Summer Vacation

Library of Congress Reading RoomWhere does a librarian go for her summer vacation? To the Library of Congress, of course! I grabbed a backpack and headed to Washington, DC, with one hope in mind; a behind the scenes tour of the Library of Congress. That was exactly what I got! Chills came over me as I walked up the stairs to this great library.

Color Photos of the Great Depression

The Denver Post Photo Blog has an amazing set of photos - Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943 - from the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress.  They are reproductions from color slides taken by the US Farm Security Administration from 1939-1943.  The photos are from all over the country, including some from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.  I think my favorite photo from the set is a real life "Rosie the Riviter," I love how her face is mirrored in the side of the "Vengeance" dive bomber.
