Today, two lucky winners at the LIFE program, Barbara Puckett and Arvis Stribling, won a pair of tickets to the upcoming production of Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats. Crowns will run from October 8-18 in the Center for the Arts, Main Stage Theatre. Adapted from Michael Cunningham's and Craig Marberry's book, Regina Taylor's "Crowns" captures the thrill of self-expression with a series of intimate gospel-infused musical portraits, as seen through the eyes of a Brooklyn teen sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina.
"CROWNS, a stand-up-and-testify musical based on the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, focuses on Yolanda, a young Brooklyn girl who is sent down South to stay with her grandmother. As Yolanda encounters her grandmother and her grandmother's friends in the rituals of preparing for and going to Sunday church service, she begins to discover connections to older traditions and a deeper spirituality.
