Book Hunters in Brief #85: Women of Rock

There was a time--not all that long ago--when a guy could say, "she plays guitar pretty good...for a girl" without being thought to be a barely-sentient accretion of cheese puff dust and questionable hygienic practices.

Those days are gone (at least among reasonably enlightened music lovers) and, in the case of rock and roll, it only took sixty or seventy years!

This week, Book Hunters give a shout out to women who rock.

A Melodious Tale

This is a lovely picture book that has been loosely based on an article that ran in the Washington Post several years back. It is a story that stuck with me;  I was delighted to learn that it is now written in a format that I can share with young people. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have.

CD Playlist for Families

Summer is almost here, and I realize that many of you will be planning a "road trip."  In my world, there is only thing more important than the GPS and that is my music list.  Here is a list of tunes that both you and your children will enjoy.

How Music Works

How Music WorksFor those of us who like to take things apart and see how they work, there’s a new book: How Music Works by John Powell.  A little science, a little psychology… now I know why a piece of music with no lyrics can actually make you cry.

Audio Books Playlist For Children

Many of you will soon be celebrating Spring Break. So, I wanted to highlight audio books for young children. The items that I have chosen not only include the picture book, but they also include a musical CD version. I encourage you to try these out during your next car trip.

I Can't Wait!

Jenny Berggren - To Win the WorldMy 2012 book year started on a high note when I learned that my favorite singer, Jenny Berggren, is set to release her autobiography in English. You may not immediately recognize the name, but if you've ever heard "The Sign", "Don't Turn Around" or "Beautiful Life", then you've heard Jenny Berggren's work as a part of Swedish pop sensation Ace of Base.

Movies & Music: A Holiday Tradition

origami ornamentChristmas is my very favorite holiday. I love everything about it. I love that Christmas lasts all month and one radio station plays nothing but Christmas music. I love trimming the tree and hanging stockings, baking cookies and eating them, too! I love giving presents (and receiving presents), dreaming of a white Christmas, and spending time with family. Most of all, I adore singing all my favorite Christmas songs and curling up on the couch and watching all my favorite Christmas movies.
