I used to whine to my daughter about Hollywood's insistence on ruining so many of my fond childhood memories by adapting favorite books into movies until, one day in the car after watching a truly execrable adaptation of truly great children's book, she fixed me with the kind of withering look that pre-adolescent girls tend to reserve only for their fathers, and said something to the effect of, "The book is the book. The movie is the movie." She was right, of course. They are two different mediums with there own conventions and limitations. A bad adaptation does nothing to diminish the book...in theory, at least.
