http://www.hcpl.net/content/book-hunters-brief-19-steampunk-romance-seriesSteampunk Romance graphicThis week, Book Hunters turn their attention to a relatively new subgenre: a mashup of steampunk and the ever-popular historical romance.
The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook
A Conspiracy of Alchemists by Liesel Schwarz
Steam & Sorcery by Cindy Spencer Pape
The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross

Sailing the Iron Seas

rivetedWhile I'm waiting in line for a copy of Riveted by Meljean Brook, I decided to re-read the first two full length books in the Iron Seas series, The Iron Duke and Heart of Steel.  This created a spectacular episode of binge reading.  I discovered that, in addition to the two titles mentioned, there are several novellas set in this incredibly imaginative world, where the reader will experience recognizable bits of history and Europe paired with airships and zombies and people made up of fantastic mechanical bits.  Of course, I had to read those, too.

SF Genre: Steampunk

The progression of Steampunk from fringe subgenre to mainstream has taken a few decades.  You could say it has taken a little over a century if you want to throw in H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, and we really should.  While those two authors are often relegated to the “classics” section of the library, their incorporation of the bizarre, anachronistic engineering, and influence from the possibilities of science put many of their stories clearly in the Steampunk category.

Shocking!!!

The time has finally come; the end of one of my favorite series. Sure it was a trilogy, but it was just so darn fun! The characters, the setting, the action, the plot; every element about the story was amazing. It was a great way to finish the series. Alan Cumming is once again narrating the story, and once again he does an outstanding job.

Behemoth

Alek and Deryn, I mean, Dylan are back for the second installment of the Leviathan Trilogy. Picking up directly after the close of Leviathan, Behemoth finds Alek and Dylan racing toward Istanbul in hopes of keeping the Ottoman Empire out of the conflict between the Clanker Germans and the Darwinist British Empire. Neither teen knows all of the other's secrets, but they have become friends. Their friendship is tested as Alek and part of his contingent escape the airship Leviathan and become caught up in the rising rebellion against the Ottoman sultan. In addition, Dylan struggles with her desire to tell Alek her true gender as she begins hoping he will see her as more than a friend.

Steampunk

I’m coming late to this party.  Yes, I’ve seen the movies and watched some of the TV shows.  But overall, the concept of steampunk is fairly new to me.

Scope of Speculative Fiction

Extraordinary EnginesSpeculative Fiction (SciFi/Fantasy) has often taken the possible and impossible to explore new worlds or our world in alternate times or histories. Within that larger genre are many subgenres. Amy Goldschlager (Avon/EOS) provided an explanation of several of the different subgenres in 1997. You can read her listing here.

Steampunk DIY Tea Party

Join me on Thursday, July 23rd at 3pm for an event which is part Victorian tea party, part DIY (do it yourself) extravaganza. While you enjoy your tea and scones, learn how to create real Victorian crafts with a Steampunk twist.
