Help with Income Tax Forms

Tax form girlWould you like some help with those pesky income tax forms? AARP volunteers trained by the IRS will once again be at the Fairbanks Library 3 days per week to help people complete and file their federal income tax returns. There are no age or income requirements for this service. The volunteers will be here from February 1 through April 18, Mondays from 1 pm - 5 pm, Thursdays from 1 pm - 5 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am - 2 pm. The volunteers offer assistance only on a first come, first served basis (no appointments) and only in person (not by telephone). Remember to bring all your documents! AARP Tax Aide is Back!

AARP Tax Aide is about to begin again, starting February 1st! Every year qualified agents from the American Association of Retired Persons volunteer at our libraries to complete the tax returns of elderly and low income earners. They work in our meeting room, Room L-129, Mondays (noon to 4 pm), Wednesdays (10 am to 2 pm), and Saturdays (11 am to 3 pm) and provide confidential assistance to as many people as they can accommodate.

If you wish to receive this tax return assistance, please bring with you as much of the following as applies to your situation:
Valid identification with current address for yourself and your dependents
-Social Security cards for yourself and your dependents
-Your wage, salary, income statements (W-2 and/or 1099)
-Last year’s income tax return statement
-If you are a homeowner, the amount of property tax you paid in 2014
-If you bought a new vehicle in 2014, the amount of sales tax you paid
-Documentation for deductible expenses (mortgage interest, real estate taxes paid, medical expenses, charitable donations, mileage for volunteer work)
-Documentation for items that qualify for tax credit (child care, post-secondary education, home purchase contracts & closing statement for homes purchased in the past year)

Last tip: The Tax Aide people receive customers on a first-come, first-served basis only. So come early to get your name on the list!

MoneyNext Tuesday (4/15) is your last day to get the AARP Tax-Aide volunteers to help file your taxes at the library.  In case of a crowd, arrive by 3:00pm to ensure your place in line.  Once you're finished with tax season, stop by on Wednesday (4/16) at 6:00pm for our How Money Works lesson to put the finishing touches on your financial year.

AARP Tax Aide Begins Saturday, February 2nd

AARP Tax Aide begins this Saturday. Every year, trained volunteers from the Association of Retired Persons offer help in completing simple tax returns for elderly and low income earners. The help is offered three times a week in Room L-129 on a first-come, first-served basis until the middle of April.

Mondays from noon to 4 pm

Wednesdays 10 to 2 pm

Saturdays 11 to 3 pm

Where are all the tax forms?

You can find tax forms on the first floor across from the Reference
Desk. Please note that the production of some 2012 major tax products, including the Form
1040 and the Instructions for Form 1040, were impacted by the recent
passage of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 and are delayed. Know that as soon as the forms arrive, we will place them out for pickup and blog about them here.

Need Your Taxes Filed

Are you still needing your taxes filed?  AARP is at the Baldwin Boettcher Library doing taxes.  Did you know you do not have to be a member of AARP for them to help you.  Did you know you do not have to be a certain age for them to help you?  They will not do business taxes but they will help you with your personal filing if you bring all social security cards for the people on your return, 2010 Tax Return and all 2011 tax documents.  

When are they here?  Mondays 1 pm - 6 pm, Wednesday 12 noon to 5 pm, Friday 1 pm - 5 pm and Saturdays 12 noon until 4 pm.  It is on a first come first serve basis and you may wait a little while on some days but remember it is FREE!!

1040 Instructions Are Here!

If you heard a loud scream of joy coming from the library this afternoon around 2:30, now you know the reason why - our IRS 1040 All Instructions have finally arrived!  We've got some on the first floor in the rotunda area, and many more copies upstairs in the reference area.  We know you've been waiting forever, so come on over and get your copy now.  Below are our opening hours:

Tax Assistance from AARP

taxesThe fine folks from AARP will be onsite to help you file your taxes at the Northwest Library. This service is free. The AARP volunteers will help all ages (not just AARP members!). Get here early as the service is first come, first serve!
