Harris County Public Library will begin offering free citizenship classes this month.  We are in need of volunteers to help teach the classes in this program, to be held in various library locations.  Volunteers are required to attend a 3-hour HCPL Citizenship Tutor Training.  Training topics will include eligibility requirements, the citizenship process, the Naturalization test and Civics.

The initial training opportunity will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Parker Williams Branch Library, located at 10851 Scarsdale Boulevard, Suite 510, Houston, TX 77089.  For more information, or to register, call Alisha Hall at 713-749-9000 or email alisha_hall@hcpl.net.

Tutors Needed!

We need volunteer English as a Second Language tutors! You may know that we have an ongoing ESL and English literacy program here at the library. Newcomers to our country are paired with community volunteers and have lessons at the library at mutually convenient times. You don't have to speak another language to become a tutor; we provide learning materials, training, and ongoing support for you, and you get the immense satisfaction that comes from having an intense encounter with a person from another culture who is learning to embrace ours. If you're interested in volunteering, call Suellen at 832-559-4220.

ESL Tutor Training September 28

At LSC-Tomball Community Library, requests for help in mastering the English language are ongoing. People attempting English for the first time and veterans who want to improve their grammar, reading, writing, or accent keep inquiring; so we try to match these eager adult learners with a volunteer tutor.

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer tutor? You don’t need skills in another language and you don’t need to be an expert. We’re having a training day on Saturday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 12:30, at the Barbara Bush Library on Cypresswood. So now would be a good time to sign up. Call us at 832-559-4200.

We Need Even More ESL Tutors

Ten weeks ago we wrote that our English as a Second Language programs were burgeoning and that we needed tutors. A number of people signed up and we’re so grateful. And now we need even more tutors because even more people are asking to learn English.

We need Tutors

Our English as a Second Language programs are burgeoning. Every week at the library we hold discussion groups that provide forums for practicing speaking English, and we also offer individual tutoring sessions--also at the library--at times convenient to the tutor and the student.

We're looking for more volunteers to tutor people who want to learn to speak, read, and write English. Are you interested? If you'd like to volunteer, please give Charity Martin a call at 832-559-4200.
