Guatemala Sinkhole

photo of sinkholeI know what you're thinking, "this can't be real".  The first time I saw the images I thought they were photoshopped, but I was wrong.  The Guatamala Sinkhole in downtown Guatemala City is about 60 feet wide and about 300 feet deep.  Scientist believe that Tropical Storm Agatha played a part in the sinkhole formation.  Guatemala City is built on a "pumice fill", ash and rock debris from ancient volcanic eruptions. Water saturated the ash filled soil and when it bacame too heavy it collapsed.  A three-story building is said to have fallen into the hole.

Let It Rain

Don't let the cold weather get you down? It is the best time to snuggle up with a good book. Tuck youself in and grab a mystery. Light your fireplace and read a romance novel. Gather the family around the living room and share favorite poems. The silver lining of rain and cold is a Harris County Library Card and some really great winter reads.

Is It Autumn Yet?

WeatherYes, it's officially autumn, although you wouldn't know it by the weather we've had lately.  It's still hot and humid, but not for long.  I've heard a cold front is going to sweep through in the next day or so.  After hearing the news, I celebrated.  I also began to wonder how weather actually works.  I realized I talk about the weather all the time, yet I don't really know how to predict it or how it forms.  What better way to learn more than to find some books at the library?
