ChooseMyPlate.gov

ChooseMyPlate.govYou can say 'goodbye' to the food pyramid--the USDA just announced the new MyPlate government guide to healthy eating. The decades old food pyramid was widely considered difficult to comprehend. The plate breaks down the components of a well-balanced meal into a simple to understand diagram. The new ChooseMyPlate.gov website includes a clickable image of the plate with tips and advice on each component, as well as a wealth of resources for learning about healthful eating. There are dietary guidelines, interactive tools, and plenty of information on feeding healthy kids. Take a look!

Swiftly Tilting Planets on NASA's Solar System Exploration Site

If you are as fascinated by space exploration as I am, you'll love NASA's Solar System Exploration Site. The beautifully designed site has been nominated for a Webby Award. Spinning planets in the header allow you to click for information on each one.

Other sections contain a wealth of information on NASA missions, science and technology, and wonderful multimedia stories. The Kids section is full of great facts and interactive games for your child to explore. Way cool!

Earth Day

NASA Blue Marble

Friday, April 22 is Earth Day and we hope you can make small (or big) changes to show our planet we love it.
ReNest, a personal favorite site to follow for green living tips and more, recently shared 10 Things You Can Do Today to Start Living Greener. Here are a few that I am starting to do which are mentioned in their tips:

From Your Couch to a 5K, Really!

woman joggerI don't know about you all, but I'm a couch potato, and I like running about as much as I like getting a root canal.  I might even go as far as saying I loathe it.  I often joke that the only time I will voluntarily run is if I'm being chased by an ax-wielding maniac.  I've tried running before, but the shin splints I get are indescribably painful.  As much as I detest it though, running/jogging is still one of the best ways to lose weight and get in shape.  So, it's time for me to get past the loathing, pain, whining, complaining, pain, excuses, pain, did I mention pain?, and get off the couch.

The Stork is Coming!

eagle ckickSquee!!!  Adorably cute baby eagles coming soon.  Check out the Nest Cams live feed of soon to be hatched baby eagles.  The eggs were laid on February 23 and are due to hatch on April 1.  Mama eagle, or at least I assume it's mama, is currently catching some shut-eye to prepare for the big day.

What do you get an expectant mama eagle?  Do they make onesies for eaglets?  Is there a worm gift backet?

Have Nook, Will Travel!

nookcolor imageSo, I was very fortunate to receive a Nook this past Valentine's Day, though I think it must be noted that my husband may have just gotten tired of my "borrowing" his.  Anyways, I have one now and am very much enjoying the ease of carrying around several books in one medium size portable device.

The great thing is that I don't even have to buy any books, I just download them for free from the HCPL Digital Media Catalog.  Now it's true that not every book is available as a download, but there are still plenty to choose from including new releases.

Keep Me Out, Please!

keep me out logoDo you find yourself checking your Twitter account 4,365,241 times a day?  Are you convinced that if you don't check CNN every five minutes, the world might spin out of control?  Well, the first thing you need to do is step back and take a deep breath.  Ok, now step forward.  Ok, now step back.  Ok, now I'm just messing with you.  But really, now that you're hopefully distracted from those other websites, doesn't it feel good?
