The Grouchy Ladybug by:Eric Carle
This is the colorfully illustrated tale of how two ladybugs get along in the world. It begins as a friendly ladybug flies onto a leaf one morning and starts eating aphids for breakfast. A grouchy ladybug flies onto the same leaf and tries to pick a fight with the friendly ladybug over breakfast. When the friendly ladybug won't fight, the grouchy ladybug backs off and flies off. As the day progresses, the grouchy ladybug picks fights with many larger creatures. Finally, the grouchy ladybug picks on a whale and gets tossed right back where it started on the leaf next to the friendly ladybug. By this time it is night and the friendly ladybug offers the grouchy ladybug some dinner. The grouchy ladybug accepts and demonstrates the importance of getting along with others in the world.
The Very Lazy Ladybug by:Isobel Finn
Imagine a ladybug so lazy that she sleeps all day and hasn't even bothered to learn to fly! This boldly-illustrated book tells the tale of how a ladybug learns to fly on her own. It starts with the ladybug wanting to find a new place to sleep. Because she doesn't know how to fly, she has to hitch a ride with a series of animal friends to look for a new place to sleep. Each of these sleeping places is uncomfortable in some way. She thinks she has found a great spot on the trunk of an elephant, but he sneezes so hard one day that the ladybug is sent flying off his trunk. Now that she is forced off the trunk, she learns how to use her own body to fly on her own.
Fly, Fly, Fly.
Ladybugs fly.
Fly over here.
Fly over there.
They fly up high and they fly down low.
Around and around and around they go.
They fly fast, and they fly-fly slow.
Oh, ladybugs fly.
