Songs
The People in Your Neighborhood
I don't use all of these verses. You can pick and choose to fit your needs.

Oh, who are the people in your neighborhood,
In you neighborhood,
In your neighborhood?
Oh, who are the people in your neighborhood?
The people that you meet each day.

Oh, the postman always brings the
mail
Through rain or snow or sleet or hail
I'll work and work the whole day through
To get your letters safe to you.
'Cause a postman is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
Oh, the postman is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day

Oh, a fireman is brave it's said
His engine is a shiny red
If there's a fire anywhere about
Well, I'll be sure to put it out.
'Cause a fireman is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
He's in your neighborhood
A fireman is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

The baker is the one who makes
Your bread and rolls and pies and cakes
If you want something sweet to eat, go see The baker in the bakery
?Cause the baker is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
oh, the baker is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

A teacher works the whole day through
To teach important things to you
He'll teach you things you won't forget
Like numbers and the alphabet
?Cause the teacher is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
Oh, the teacher is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

A barber has a great big chair
You sit in it, he cuts your hair
He'll snip and clip and never rest
Until your haircut looks its best
?Cause the barber is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
oh, the barber is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

The bus driver drives fast or slow
To take you where you want to go
When you get in and pay your fare
She will drive you anywhere
?Cause the bus driver is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
Oh the bus driver is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

A dentist cares for all your teeth
The top ones and the ones beneath
So if you have an aching tooth
He'll fix it quick, and that's the truth
?Cause the dentist is a person in your neighborhood
in your neighborhood
oh, the dentist is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

The doctor makes you well real quick
If by chance you're feeling sick
She works and works the whole day long
To help you feel well and strong
?Cause the Doctor is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
in your neighborhood
Oh, the doctor is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

The grocer sells the things you eat
Like bread and eggs, cheese and meat
No matter what you're looking for
You'll find it at the grocery store
?Cause the grocer is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
Oh, the grocer is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

The shoemaker is always there
To take care of the shoes you wear
With his hammer, nails, and glue
He'll fix your shoes as good as new
?Cause the shoemake is a person in your neighborhood

The cleaner is the one who knows
How to clean and press your clothes
He'll take a jacket, suit, or vest
And clean it so you'll look your best
?Cause the cleaner is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
Oh, the cleaner is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day.

The trash collector works each day
He'll always take your trash away
He drives the biggest truck you've seen
To keep the city streets all clean
?Cause the trash collector is a person in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
Oh, the trash collector is a person in your neighborhood
A person that you meet each day

I Can Do Anything
Sung to the tune: Shortnin' Bread or clapped to Patty Cake, Patty Cake

I can do anything
Anything at all.
I can be anybody
When I?m nice and tall.

I could be a policeman.
That I can do!
I could be a doctor
Just let me through!

I could be a carrier
I will bring your mail.
If you want to see a vet
Just wag your tail!

I could be a movie star
And stand upon a stage.
I can do it all, my dear
I will be the rage!

A rock star and a teacher.
That?s what I?ll be!
I?ll stand up in front of you and be a different me.

I could be a lawyer
I could be a judge
I could be a candy cook
And make you some fudge!

I can be ?about anything
Anything that?s fun!
But I can?t be a singer
Because my song is done.

Many Jobs
Sung to Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

There are so many jobs to do.
There is one that?s right for you.
Be a _______if you please.
Be the best that you can be.
There are so many jobs to do.
There is one that?s right for you.

For any kind of joyb you choose,
There are things that you must do.
Study hard so you will know
How to do your work just so.
Find out how you need to dress.
Come on time, and do your best.

Craft
I picked up free fireman's hats at my local fire department although they are not necessary to have to do this craft. Because we had them we became paramedics.

I us a 12 X 18 piece of black construction paper and free hand medical bag shape with handles and an opening wide enough for little hands to cling to. I use the computer to print out white slips that say Dr. _________ so they can be filled out and attached to the outside of the bags. I then handed out bandaids and cotton balls.

In addition, I laminated other articles such as thermometer, etc. I found these items at:

Other
I use the following two activities at the beginning of my storytime to draw the children in.

Activity: Who's Hat Game

I enlarged pictures of hats for different professions so that I could hold them around the front of my puppet's muppet-like head. I laminated them so they not tear. I let the children guess what profession my puppet was in.

Hats can be found at: http://www.mrsnelsonsclass.com/teacherresources/thematicunits/communityhelpers.aspx
