We are all familiar with the 9-1-1 emergency calling system but did you know the first such system was only used 42 years ago on, February 16, 1968? The call was placed in Haleyville, Alabama by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite from Haleyville City Hall to U.S. Rep. Tom Bevill at the city's police station. Bevill reportedly answered the phone with "Hello." Now we all commonly dial 9-1-1 for emergencies and we are connected to local police, fire, and ambulance services where ever we may be.
