Adults - Friday, 2/9 @ 10:30 AM - TGIF Programs - Speaker Series - Lora-Marie Bernard

We invite adults to join us Friday, 2/9 at 10:30 AM in celebration and recognition of African – American History Month. Local author and historian Lora-Marie will make an encore presentation of “Emily West: How She Became the Yellow Rose of Texas.” Sam Houston started a tale about a free woman of color who worked for James Morgan that became one of the greatest Texas legends. Emily West came from Connecticut to work for Morgan and was later captured by Santa Anna. According to records, Houston once said his troops were able to surprise the Mexican troops and win the Texas Revolution because she was having an affair with the general at the time of the Texan attack. But did she? Through the years, the story became the basis for The Yellow Rose of Texas. It commemorates Houston's tale about West but a second look at history tells a more complicated tale of a free women of color and her experience and courage during the Texas Revolution.
