African American History Month and Chinese New Year

February is here and with it comes an important reminder. This month is set aside for us to contemplate and reflect on the history and heritage of African Americans and their role in shaping this country. Even though February is the month set aside for us to reflect upon and contemplate both the triumphant and tragic events in the history of African Americans, it should not be the only time we think about this. Here at Evelyn Meador we have two programs that we hope will inspire and motivate our patrons to learn more about the rich heritage and culture of African Americans.

For our younger ones K-6th grade we present:

2/10/2018 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
African Folklore and Fairytales
Presented in partnership with Young Audiences of Houston we are hosting Second Generation Dance Company;
Join SGDC as they explore the ancient myths of deepest Africa in their production
of African Folklore and Fairytales. Visit with Anansi and the turtle, gaze upon the Flying Africans, find out what lessons Tortoise taught Eagle, and find out why the cheetah's cheeks are stained. Learn the answer to these questions, and more. This performance is filled with many humorous characters, but don't forget your thinking cap - you just may learn a lesson or two!

For older generations we present:
2/21/18 1:15 PM
Growing Up Gullah
Meet Dorothy Browner-Hubler. She uses song, dance and stories in this film produced by the Library of Congress to teach people about the Gullah culture and language.

In February we will also be celebrating the Chinese New Year. Please register for this event here.
