The Amazing Read: Summer Reading Challenge, Week 3

Amazing Read LogoI hope you liked last week's challenge to revisit a childhood favorite as much as I did. I dug out some of my old Classics Illustrated and gorged my way down memory lane: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. (yeah, I was kind of a creepy kid).

This week, let's saddle up and read a book about Texas, by a Texas author or set in Texas. I encourage you to learn a bit more about the Lone Star State's singular history; enjoy one of our great tale-spinners like Larry McMurtry, Mary Willis Walker or Cormac McCarthy; swoon over a rugged Texas hero; or--in the spirit of all great Texans--strike out on your own and find something that fits you like a good pair a boots. Whatever you choose, let us know about it!

Myself, I figure since the 4th of July is coming and it would be positively unpatriotic not to fire up the barbecue, I'm going to read Follow the Smoke: 14,783 Miles of Great Texas Barbecue, Places, People, Secrets and Recipes by John DeMers.

Enjoy and don't forget to share what you're reading with us and all your fellow readers!

I am currently reading "To Selena, With Love" by Chris Perez. Selena Quintanilla was a famous Tejano superstar in the early 1990’s, and her hometown was Corpus Christi, TX. However, she was tragically murdered by her fan club president. In this book, Selena’s widowed husband shares his loving memories of her. Chris Perez now lives in San Antonio, TX.

I recommend Rick Riodan's

I recommend Rick Riodan's Texas mysteries featuring Tres Nevarre, starting with Big Red Tequila. As one quote says "Meet Tres Navarre...tequila drinker, Tai Chi master, unlicensed P.I., with a penchant for Texas-size trouble." This was what the Texas native wrote before becomeing known for the Percy Jackson books.

Excellent! I had no idea

Excellent! I had no idea Riordan was from Texas.

Two recommendations are better than one, we always say. Thanks!

I highly recommend Texas

I highly recommend Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore.  It's a mystery/ghost story set in small-town Texas.  It's a very quick and enjoyable summer read!

Sounds great! Some spooky chills to cool us off this summer! Thanks, Mallorie!

I am reading a brand new book

I am reading a brand new book called Gone at 3:17 the Untold Story of the Worst School Disaster in American History. by David M. Brown and Micahel Wereschagin. It is the true story of the massive explosion of the New London School in East Texas due to the accumulation of odorless natural gas. This event led to the addition of the odor which is now added to natural gas.

A terrible tragedy--a whole

A terrible tragedy--a whole generation of a small town's children gone in the blink of an eye--but a great suggestion for an interesting read about a little known event in Texas history. Thanks, Myra!
