... and a Happy New Year!

Another year has come and gone.  Well, almost gone.  And in the spirit of the holidays and parties and old friendships and new beginnings, I thought I’d offer a list of some movies that gave us memorable New Year’s Eve parties.  I hope you might find something fun or exciting or dangerous -- or any combination of those -- among the choices.

About a Boy (2002) – Hugh Grant, Nicholas Hoult
An Affair to Remember (1957) – Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr
After the Thin Man (1936) – William Powell, Myrna Loy
The Apartment (1960) – Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine
Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) – Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant
Ocean’s Eleven (1960) – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, Angie Dickinson
The Poseidon Adventure (1972) – Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters, Jack Albertson, Stella Stevens
Sleepless in Seattle (1993) – Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan
Someone Like You (2001) – Ashley Judd, Hugh Jackman, Greg Kinnear
Sunset Boulevard (1950) – Gloria Swanson, William Holden
Trading Places (1983) –Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis
When Harry Met Sally (1989) – Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan
While You Were Sleeping (1995) – Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher

My favorite movie of the list is After the Thin Man, which features not one but three very different New Year's Eve parties.  And that's followed closely by The Apartment, which has one of the quietest, sweetest celebrations in movies.

Happy New Year!
