The Art of Selling Books

Larry McMurtry, prolific author and Pulitzer Prize winner who is best known for classics like Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show, and Terms of Endearment also sells books in his hometown of Archer City, Texas.

McMurtry recently downsized his four store 450,000 volume inventory by holding a massive auction dubbed "The Last Book Sale". Buyers from all over the state, the country, and the world traveled to tiny Archer City to haul away large amounts of inventory. McMurtry didn’t get rid of every book, however. He still has one book store left with approximately 125,000 volumes in the collection. Read more about his days a book reader, scout, seller, and store owner in his 2008 book titled Books: A Memoir.

Some of the auctioned books may even have a few leftover bookmarks still nestled between the pages. See what book dealers sometimes stumble upon in the pages of the books they buy in Forgotten Bookmarks: A Bookseller's Collection of Odd Things Lost Between the Pages by Michael Popek.
