Baldwin Boettcher Branch -- Evening Book Club
Title to be discussed: Three novellas in The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories by Leo Tolstoy. Besides the title story, we will read "The Diary of a Madman" and "The Devil." Date of meeting: Monday, December 20, at 6:30 PM. Summary: This vibrant translation of Tolstoy's most important short fiction includes eleven masterful stories, some autobiographical, others moral parables, and all told with the evocative power that was Tolstoy's alone. "The Devil" is a fascinating tale of obsession; "The Death of Ivan Ilyich," an intense and moving examination of death and the possibilities of redemption; and "The Diary of a Madman," a brilliant study of "right living" revealed by one's conscience. These stories and the rich translation reveal the author as a passionate moral guide, an unflinching seeker of truth, and ultimately, a creator of enduring and universal art.
