Baldwin Boettcher Receives Literacy Grant
Baldwin Boettcher is thrilled to be one of 70 public libraries in 21 states recently selected by the American Library Association to receive a $5,000 grant as part of "The American Dream Starts @ your library" initiative. This initiative is funded by Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
Grant recipients include libraries in large cities and rural towns throughout Dollar General's market area. Grant funds will be used by the libraries to build innovative literacy services for adult English language learners living and working in their communities.
The branch currently has two on-going ESL classes covering beginning and intermediate levels of English conversation. The grant will allow us to purchase much-needed books and audiovisual materials for ESL students as well as start a new class on Saturday afternoons. Our hope is that with the expanded collection and an additional class, the whole program will grow and we can provide more classes at times convenient for those wanting to learn English.
If you are interested in helping new immigrants learn English, you will find opportunities to teach here at Baldwin Boettcher. Tutor training is scheduled at nearby Barbara Bush Branch on Saturday, September 1, at 9 AM. Check the Literacy & ESL page for information on signing up for this training and other upcoming sessions.
