The Best American Mystery Stories 2014

I enjoy looking at The Best American Mystery Stories each year when it comes out. Otto Penzler and his guest editor always choose great stories. The guest editor this year is Laura Lippman, one of my favorite mystery authors. The first story I read was “Almost Like Christmas” by the late Joseph Heller. Set in the 50’s, it involves a teacher and a sheriff trying to keep their town from exploding after a black man allegedly kills a white man. There are other great stories in here by folks like James Lee Burke, Charlaine Harris, and Annie Proulx. I always enjoy reading the stories by the authors I know and finding some new authors to try out.
