A Big Thanks for a Thankless Job

On any list of onerous tasks, preparing a tax return is bound to be near the top. If for no other reason than that, we owe a big thank you to the good people of AARP Tax Aide who, every February, set up shop at several HCPL branches to give tax help to anyone who walks through the door and asks. The operative word there is “give.” They give their time, their expertise and their effort free of charge, and we, at HCPL, are grateful to them.

But we also want to recognize them for something a little less tangible than a completed 1040, but perhaps even more significant. You see, they, and many others like them, help to make Harris County Public Library a place where the community can come together, and where neighbors can help neighbors for no other reason than that they can and they know it’s the right thing to do. So, we are doubly thankful to AARP Tax Aide, and to the many other groups and individuals who make HCPL a special place by giving their time, their efforts and resources, asking only in return that we continue to evolve to meet their community's changing needs.

If you would like to play a bigger, more active part in your community, consider one of these volunteer opportunities at HCPL: become a literacy, ESL or citizenship tutor, lend a hand with some of the day-to-day tasks necessary to make the library run, or join a Friends of the Library group.

Nice token of words. it is genuinely a thing for which a big thanks is required.
