Black History Month: Read and discuss "Red River"
Join us on Feb. 29 at 2 p.m. to discuss Red River, a historical novel by Lalita Tademy. Tademy tells the story of two families in Louisianna beginning after the civil war and continuing into the 1930s. After speaking with relatives about family history and finding vague accounts, Tademy, vice president of Sun Microsystems before becoming an author, found that they were tied to a state historical marker near the town that told the story of a tragedy from only one point of view. As Tademy says in Red River, “This novel attempts to overlay the rich anecdotes passed down in my family lore with the times in which they unfolded, a blend of fact and fiction told from the point of view of people whose voices were lost in official records.”
