City of Masks by Daniel Hecht
This paranormal mystery is set in modern-day New Orleans, with flashbacks to the 1970s. The Beaufortes have a beautiful home in the Garden District but the appearance of a malevolent spirit has driven Lila Beauforte nearly mad. Though other family members are skeptical, Cree Black, a respected parapsychologist (“ghostbuster”) is brought in to untangle the mess and solve the mystery – turns out there is a murder to be solved as well. This Southern gothic tale is first in a series by Daniel Hecht, and the eAudio version is read by Anna Fields, who does a good job of juggling different accents as well as the two genders. Ms. Fields has just the right touch of irony in her voice for this well-done ghost story.
