Easy Rawlins, a young black veteran in 1948, only wants basic middle class respect. But that’s hard to get for men like him, especially when you’ve just lost your job and might be losing your house. So when a white man in a bar offers him good money to locate a beautiful French woman last seen in the company of a negro gangster, Easy agrees. As he descends into the gritty underworld of South Central L.A., with its mean streets, cheap hotels and black jazz clubs, neither the brutish white cops nor the shady “brothers” appreciate his intrusion. The web of corruption is wide, the mystery of the French dame deep, and Easy’s involvement is becoming increasingly tangled….
