Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

San AndreasIn my years enthusiastically discussing movies with everyone I meet, I have noticed that even when people have wildly different tastes in films, they always (and this is a blatant generalization) agree on one thing: The Rock. Everyone loves The Rock. He is effortlessly cool and charismatic, imposing in stature, but an overall nice guy with a strong work ethic and a healthy appreciation for his fans.

Despite his immense popularity as an actor, Dwayne Johnson (better known as The Rock) didn’t start out in movies. In college, he played football for the University of Miami and had dreams of eventually going pro. But after a series of injuries left him benched, he turned to professional wrestling, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. The first third-generation professional wrestler for the WWF, Johnson quickly made a name for himself in the ring.

While still wrestling, Johnson turned his sights on a career as an actor. His first starring role was in The Scorpion King, which told the story of the villain he had briefly played in The Mummy Returns. The movie wasn’t his best, but it introduced the non-wrestling world, myself included, to The Rock and firmly placed him on the list of leading men. Since that time, Johnson’s career has been active and varied, with starring roles in family-friendly films like Race to Witch Mountain, franchise films like Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6, and action movies like Snitch. His movies may not be Oscar-worthy, but they are definitely entertaining. Johnson can always be counted on to give his all to every performance, whether it’s the Tooth Fairy, a law enforcement agent, or a character straight out of legend.

This weekend, Johnson’s newest film, San Andreas opens in theaters. In it, Johnson plays a Los Angeles Fire Department rescue helicopter pilot who is tasked with helping after the San Andreas Fault shifts and causes massive destruction. It looks like a classic disaster movie in the same vein as The Day After Tomorrow or Into the Storm, and I, for one, can’t wait to see it.

Can’t make it to the movie theater this weekend, or just not in the mood for a disaster movie after our week of rain? HCPL has you covered! Browse the catalog and request one of The Rock’s previous movies today!
