On the Edge of Scary

OK, I admit it.  I am a bit faint of heart when it comes to scary stories.  But I still enjoy a good mystery this time of year, something that takes me into the Halloween spirit but leaves me able to sleep through the night.

Here are some choices that are not quite horror but will still send a chill down your spine:

Tooth and Nail by Ian Rankin – a serial killer on the loose in London

A Sunless Sea by Anne Perry – a murder on the London docks to solve and a web of secrets to unravel

The Perfect Poison by Amanda Quick – a dark romance with psychics and a secret society

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins – a classic of detective fiction, a story of murder and a mysterious curse

The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian – a basement in New Hampshire, twins, and some strange herbalists set the stage

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher by Kate Summerscale – a true crime tale from Victorian England
