Fiend; with a plot that sounds like the start of a bad joke, is an unexpected treat and a fresh take on a horror sub-genre that many of the most avid enthusiasts have grown weary of. Two meth addicts come out of a rundown house after a week-long bender to find that the zombie apocalypse had come and gone without them. Out of speed and long out of time to prepare, they have just two goals; stay alive and stay high.

Author Peter Stenson packs a lot of literary punch in a relatively short novel. The characters are vividly real even at the heights of their own delirium, and the writing itself is engaging. At times funny, sometimes mercilessly poignant, Fiend is not a book to miss.
