Films that Make You Go "Hmmm..."

Have you ever seen a movie that, when asked about it, made you go “hmmm….”? There have been several movies that I’ve enjoyed, but when I stopped to really think what any of them were “about” I couldn’t say – was it that I just didn’t get the depth of “meaning” or was I trying too hard to make the movies fit some formula that they obviously disrupted? I was looking at the list of All Time 100 Best Films (trying to generate some ideas) and noticed that Brazil, The Decalogue, and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie were all listed. I really loved watching each of these – what are any of them really “about”? Hmmm…

I felt the same way about Fellini’s 8 ½ and Bergman’s Through a Glass Darkly. I’ve read the critics’ interpretations, the Wikipedia articles, overheard numerous conversations about symbolism and archetypes and allusions. Ultimately, though, I just enjoyed the experience of watching them. Even after seeing several of these movies multiple times the most intelligible thing I can say is that they intrigued me.
