Half Broke Horses: A True Life Novel
Walls is well known for The Glass Castle which tells the story of her upbringing and her parent's lives. Here she goes further back in the family history. In Half Broke Horses, Jeannette Walls tells the story of her grandmother's hard but spirited life. Lily Casey Smith is born in 1901 and lives in a West Texas dirt dugout. Her parents are poor but loving. By age six, she is breaking horses, and by twelve, she's running the ranch. She leaves at fifteen to ride alone for 28 days to a teaching job in Arizona. Her life continues to be one of adventure and hardship. The fascinating part of this book, to me, is that it is based on the life of a real person. Lily Casey Smith is interesting, inspiring, and entertaining. Since Half Broke Horses has a lot of requests on it, you may want to read The Glass Castle first.
