HCPL Receives ALA/Google Grant

Harris County Public Library is the only library in Texas to be part of the 2017 Libraries Ready to Code initiative.

The grant comes from the American Library Association and is sponsored by Google. With the funding, HCPL will work with twenty-eight other libraries across the country to design and implement computer coding programs for young people.

The grant-funded programs will address specific groups that are currently underrepresented in computer science careers: girls, residents of rural and low-income communities, as well as young people of color and those with disabilities.

Four HCPL branches will host Ready to Code programs that will consist of 8-week afterschool coding clubs that will focus on coding basics and concepts, applied coding, film work and community connections.

We're glad you wrote to us! We plan on expanding the coding programs to other branches. These initial four branches are grant-funded pilots. When we expand the programs to other branches, we will include programs aimed at other age groups. We do not yet have a timeline for roll out, but we'll keep everyone posted.

As for the current programs, they are aimed at junior high school-aged kids. Your daughter is welcome to attend.

Thanks again for your comment!
