Before there was Seabiscuit and Red Pollard, there was Hidalgo the mustang and Frank T. Hopkins. Never mind that Frank T. Hopkins may be the biggest teller of tall tales this side of Timbuktu, and a shameless and tireless self-promoter.
According to Mr. Hopkins, he and his horse won over 400 long distance races. At one point, he was even invited to participate in a thousand mile race across the so called Ocean of Fire in the Arabian Desert with his legendary horse Hidalgo. Right! (Never let truth get in the way of a good story.)
At any rate, this loose adaptation of Hopkins’ even looser memoirs starring Viggo Mortensen
is a must see if you love a good horse story. Hidalgo
is full of romance and adventure in a grand old style. And personally, I love the fact that Viggo later purchased the horse he rode in this movie, as well as the one he rode in Lord of the Rings. Also, according to the Internet Movie Database
, he is an expert horseman and did all of his own stunts for the film. Right!
