I am from California and I

I am from California and I can tell you that you are very fortunate to have such a WONDERFUL library system here. People back home do not believe me when I tell them what is available through the library. Libraries there have had EVERYTHING cut--hours, materials, and employees! Things are tough all over, count yourselves lucky!

We have so many skilled

We have so many skilled retirees and stay at home Moms who could step into the shoes of the departees. Give them something to do and free labor is cheap. Checking out books, shelving, computer skills are not scarce resources in our diverse community.

Volunteers are great but they

Volunteers are great but they can't check out books as library records are confidental by law. They also can't collect fine money as they aren't county employees. It is also difficult to find enough volunteers to replace a full time employee that works evenings and Saturdays/Sundays.

We already have many

We already have many wonderful volunteers to assist us at our libraries and we are grateful for the work that they do.

You have got to be kidding!

You have got to be kidding! Why are you cutting a whole day at Parker Williams Library and only leaving them open 2 nights a week? I live closer to the South Houston Library but use Parker Williams Library too because it is open 3 nights a week so I can get there after work. And looking at these new hours I don't understand why the little library in South Houston will be open 38 hours a week while Parker Williams a much larger library with much more staff is only going to be open 39 hours a week. This does not make sense and is very unfair to customers.

We are sorry that the new

We are sorry that the new hours are not convenient for you.  Both the Parker Williams and South Houston libraries have lost several staff members and we are unable to hire replacements at this time.  The reduced hours are a temporary solution until we have sufficient staff to be open the regular library schedule.

Do you have an estimate of

Do you have an estimate of when you will get more staff and be able to open the full week?

Currently, we are unable to

Currently, we are unable to estimate when we will be able to hire any new staff.

I think what those of you who

I think what those of you who are unhappy about the reduced hours at your favorite branch are missing is that the county libraries are operated with county funds which are generated through your county taxes paid. Foreclosures and reduced property values (if you appealed your property tax bill then you helped reduce the funds also) have reduced the amount of funds generated. The libraries, as well as the sheriff's office, parks and recreation, the health department and so on have had to reduce their budgets accordingly. The libraries are producing a lot of value for our communities, they are just doing it with fewer hours and fewer employees. Hey, the other day I saw two of the librarians at my local branch cleaning the public bathrooms in the middle of the day, something I am sure that they never imagined doing when they went to graduate school to become librarians. Library staff is doing a great job with the reduced funding and doing tasks above and beyond what they should be expected to do compared to other departments, and if you have to change your schedule then consider that your contribution to this economic crisis.

I agree but wonder why it is

I agree but wonder why it is that all of the cuts to hours are at libraries on the south side of the county. Shouldn't cuts be spread around the county?

We have had to reduce library

We have had to reduce library hours as staff members leave and the remaining staff is not enough to cover the regular library schedule, not by region.  Hour reductions in April affected five other locations, located in north, east and west sides of the county.  Thank you for expressing your concerns.
