The Italian Secretary: A Further Adventure of Sherlock Holmes
Inspired by the original works, several modern authors have written Sherlock Holmes stories, either continuing the saga or taking it into new directions. I’m going to look at some of these in the new few weeks. The Italian Secretary was commissioned by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the author is known for The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness. In this novel, Holmes has received a coded telegram from his brother Mycroft, and it seems the Queen needs the help of the Holmes brothers. Two murders have been committed in the royal palace of Holyrood in Scotland. This palace is supposedly haunted by the Italian secretary of Queen Mary. I found this to be an excellent mystery, keeping the spirit of the original stories. Caleb Carr does a good job of capturing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s writing style.
