James Horner (1953-2015)

Music brings something special to movies.  Certain film scores bring memories of favorite movie scenes and the emotions those scenes evoked.  Think of Kevin Costner’s Ray Kinsella playing catch with his dad in Field of Dreams.  Or Sam Worthington’s Jake riding the toruk in Avatar.  Or Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack and Kate Winslet’s Rose standing at the front of the ship and, later, the last time they held each other in Titanic.  Each scene was accompanied by music that we may not have noticed at first, but that we definitely felt.

James Horner was the composer responsible for the beautiful music in those films and in numerous others.  He wrote the scores for movies dating back to the 1970s.  Over the years, he was nominated for several awards and won Oscars, Golden Globes, and Grammys for the soundtrack of Titanic and its love song My Heart Will Go On.

On June 22, Horner died, and we lost one of the finest talents working in motion pictures and television.
