La Porte Diamond Jubilee, 1964
In 1964, a Diamond Jubilee celebration was held for La Porte’s 75th anniversary as a community (1889-1964). An original booklet from this celebration can be seen at the library. The booklet contains photographs and articles about La Porte history, with titles such as: ‘Attacapa Indians Once Roamed La Porte’, ‘Captain Allein Started La Porte Mail Delivery’, ‘La Porte Means Gate’ and ‘Land Sold for 50 Cents Per Acre’. There is even a ghost story about buried treasure and the pirate Jean La Fitte entitled ‘La Fitte Treasure Here? Saga of Our Pirate’. Ask a librarian if you would like to see the Diamond Jubilee booklet.
