Fats Waller
Born: May 21, 1904 in New York, New York, United States
Died: December 15, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Nationality: American
Waller's musical talents came about at an early age.  He was first engaged in music by accompanying his mother in the choir.  His musical ability shined through even further after beginning piano lessons at the age of six.  Waller showed an uncanny knack for learning songs by listening to them just a few times.
By 1918 Waller embraced the musical education he discovered outside of school. Waller began working at the Lincoln Theater in Harlem which was a movie and vaudeville theater. Waller honed his craft under the tutelage of James P. Johnson, an acknowledged king of stride piano (a style of jazz that grew out of ragtime that required a great deal of technique and creativity). He led small band and made hundreds of recordings, achieving considerable commercial success by blend of jazz and comic manner.  He composed songs including "Honeysuckle Rose," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Squeeze Me," "Blue Turning Grey Over You."
