LSC-CyFair President Launches Campus Giving Program

hands givingDr. Audre Levy, LSC-CyFair President, is launching a year-round program to assist families in the Cy-Fair community that cannot afford the basic essentials that many people take for granted, such as soap, toothpaste, and other necessities that cannot be purchased with public assistance funds (Lone Star Card).  This new campus initiative will begin in February when brightly colored bins will be placed in the Student Commons near each entrance to collect shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, and other personal grooming items.

The collection bins will be out the first week of each month. At the end of the week, the donated items will be collected and delivered to the Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) for distribution. CAM, located at 11202 Huffmeister, is a non-denominational local charitable organization that focuses its efforts on helping families to become self-sufficient and offers a variety of life-enhancing services by providing furniture, bedding and household items, as well as arranging for home repair projects. They also maintain a food pantry and offer financial assistance for utilities, rent, etc. However, they have very limited resources for the personal care items.

It is important that people

It is important that people think outside of the box. Diapers and feminine hygiene products are all neccessities not covered by public assistance. Children are often relegated to wearing filthy diapers for long periods. Those children are prone to crying because they are in soiled diapers. Children whom cry often are more likely to be subjected to physical abuse.
