Make a Big Difference in a Child's Life. Be a Book Buddy.

Do you enjoy working with children? Do you want to make a difference in a child's life? Then volunteer for HCPL's Book Buddies!

Book Buddies is a free program that brings children and volunteers (adults or teens) together to share the joy of reading. It pairs trained volunteers (Big Buddies) with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grades (Little Buddies). For 12 weeks, the Buddies meet once a week for 45 minutes of shared reading.

HCPL piloted Book Buddies at our Clear Lake City - County Freeman Branch Library this past spring, and it was a great success. We are expanding the program this fall, bringing it to four new branches: Aldine, Barbara Bush, Baldwin Boettcher, and Northwest. These four branches will be using Teen Volunteers as the Big Buddies. If you are in 7th - 12th grades and interested in volunteering as a Big Buddy, please stop by one of those four branches to pick up an application.

We will also be continuing the Book Buddies program at Freeman with Adult Volunteers as our Big Buddies. Freeman's program will run for twelve weeks on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:15 PM, beginning August 30th.  If you are 18 or over and interested in volunteering, please fill out the online application. If you are interested in volunteering but can't make all the session dates, we encourage you to still apply. Once you are trained, you can become an alternate Big Buddy. This means you can fill in for any Big Buddy who is absent, and you will also be all set to become a Big Buddy at any location for all future program sessions.

We plan to expand the Book Buddies program using Adult Volunteers at more locations in 2017, so please check back for updates!
