Music @ Storytime

I use music in my storytimes because it supports the developmental and emotional needs of young children. Music is a universal language that everyone can appreciate.

I hope that you are able to visit one of our programs, but if you are unable to make it, I would like  to encourage you to try a few new songs and fingerplays at home. Below are some favorites that the children enjoy.

Jim Gill is one of our favorite music artists in storytime. To encourage gross motor development (and to help get our wiggles out) I like the The Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes cd. I highly recommend that families take a "spin" and try out the Washing Machine song and the Silly Dance Contest. I am sure that it will become a family favorite. However, be warned that this cd tends to provoke silliness and  laughter from children of all ages.

There Was A Little Turtle, Sequencing Skills

There was a little turtle
Who lived in a box.
He swam in the puddles
And climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at the mosquito,
He snapped at the flea.
He snapped at the minnow,
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito,
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow,
But he didn't catch me!

Ten Little Bluebonnets,  Math

One little, two little, three little blue bonnets,
Four little, five little, six little blue bonnets,
Seven little, eight little nine little blue bonnets,
Ten little blue bonnets standing tall.

Oh, Mr. Sun,  Crossing the Midline
Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Please shine down on me.
Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Hiding behind a tree
These little children are asking you
To please come out so we can play with you.
Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun,
Please shine down on,
please shine down on,
Please shine down on me.

The Continents Song, Geography

Tell me the Continents, Tell me the Continents,
Tell me if you can, If you can!
• North America
• South America
• Europe
• Asia
• Africa
• Don’t forget Australia!
• Don’t forget Antarctica!
Tell me if you can. If you can.
North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica!
